proHolz Student Trophy 24 | award winner Project Holzriegel Hof
The entire ITI team congratulates Maximilian Huber, Aaron Michel, and Robert Faul on their project Holzriegel Hof and the prize won at the proHolz Student Trophy 24.
The project was supervised and mentored by Peter Bauer, Alireza Fadai, and Bernhard Holletschek within the course framework.
Block boundary extension with respect and added value for the existing structure
Holzriegel Hof builds on the existing underground garage, closing the block boundary with a five-story building along the entire length of Inzersdorfer Straße, thereby creating a large, green, shared courtyard as added value for the existing buildings. Access to the apartments is via a courtyard-side walkway made of reinforced concrete. In front of the walkway, there are three free-standing structures with additional small residential units. The base houses commercial uses on the street side, with community rooms arranged on the courtyard side. The design of the facades also differentiates between the street and courtyard sides: the street facade features a reddish color scheme inspired by the neighboring brick building and thus integrates well into the street scene. The courtyard-facing structures are colorful and enliven the appearance. The new building is designed as a solid wood structure with a wooden-clay ceiling above the ground floor. The connections of the individual components, the walls and ceilings made of cross-laminated timber and the timber frame construction elements for the exterior walls, are designed to be glue-free and dismantlable with the idea of circularity. The project impresses with its calm approach, which respects, continues, and enhances the existing structure, as well as the well-thought-out timber construction design and execution, which highlights the strengths of timber construction.
